Blog 04 – Canon launches C300 cinema camera and I finally meet Vincent Laforet :)

Since the release of the Canon 5D Mark 2, I have been engulfed in the ever changing landscape of HDSLR digital photo/video camera technology. I think it’s safe to say that the Canon 5DM2 revolutionized the entire industry and brought high end video and film production to an even playing field for the first time in history. And it could also be argued that the man who was instrumental in pushing everything over the edge and starting the revolution was non other than Vincent Laforet. Vincent was best known for his award winning photography when he stumbled upon a prototype of the, now legendary, 5DM2. On a whim, he decided to produce a short video piece entitled “Reverie”, which went on to thrust him into the spotlight as the photographer who crossed over into video and hasn’t really turned back since. How do I know? I asked him and he told me. That’s right. Vince and Canon are presently on a cross Canada tour promoting the release of the new C300 Cinema camera. A massive upgrade from the HDSLR technology that changed everything and actually, Canon’s first real foray into the realm of professional film and videography. The camera packs an impressive 4K sensor as well as all the necessary bells and whistles like time code, audio sync, HDMI out, etc, that were lacking from it’s younger HDSLR predecessors in the EOS line. The camera also clocks in at an impressive price point of 16K$, which compared to its rivals in similar categories, is quite a good deal, believe it or not. It may not be as accesible to the masses as were previous EOS models but it is sure to make a serious mark in the world of high end video technology. Check out some pictures from the event!

p.s. BTW, Vince is a super nice guy and very down to earth. Also, it turns out he speaks fluent French!
